What Range Architecture Is (and Why It Matters)

The Concept

Range architecture is the structural plan for a collection. It determines how many SKUs sit at each price point, what proportion of the range is entry-level volume versus hero-piece editorial, and how categories are balanced against each other. Most designers learn range architecture on the job, usually by watching a range fail in a wholesale review and working backwards to understand why.

The discipline exists because a buyer does not purchase individual pieces. A buyer purchases a range. A range that is structurally incoherent fails a buyer review regardless of how good any individual piece is. This means a collection can be beautifully designed and commercially strong on a piece-by-piece basis but still fail at wholesale because the structure is wrong.

Range architecture makes structure a deliberate decision rather than an accidental outcome.

In Practice

Same Design Quality, Different Outcomes

Two AW collections with identical design quality. Collection A has 12 hero pieces, 2 basics, and no entry price. Collection B has 3 heroes, 7 mid-range volume pieces, and 4 entry pieces. Collection A fails wholesale. No buyer can build a commercial floor from 12 heroes. Collection B gets placed at the first appointment. The design quality was never the differentiator.

Your Exercise

Open Range Health. Add your current range, or add 5 to 8 test styles to see the architecture. Look at the category balance and price architecture outputs. How many heroes versus volume pieces do you have?
